Christmas bark is a fun festive treat that’s perfect for kids. Made with only chocolate and sprinkles it’s couldn’t be easier to make!
Christmas chocolate bark is a great fun and easy thing for kids to make during the festive period. Although it involves a bit of heat to melt the chocolate, it’s a no bake recipe that only involves chocolate and whatever Christmas sprinkles you’re using.
The fun part comes in the decorating, because without that you might as well just eat a bar of chocolate. But once you’ve added the festive decorations not only does it become much more fun to look at, if you’ve added a range of treats it can be much more fun to eat!
How can kids help to make Christmas chocolate bark?
Christmas chocolate bark is among the easiest festive bakes you can make with your kids. There’s very little to it – simply melt some chocolate and then get your kids to decorate it.
Even if your kids are too young to help melt the chocolate, once you’ve done that you can leave them in charge of adding the sprinkles and decorating it.
Can you use a microwave to melt the chocolate?
Yes. You can melt the chocolate in a microwave if you would like. I personally prefer melting chocolate in a double boiler as you can do it more gently and have more control over it, but it’s also possible to use a microwave.
To use a microwave, simply put the chocolate pieces into a microwavable bowl and heat it at 80% power in 30 second intervals. Stir the fudge in between each 30 second burst and stop heating it as soon as it has melted.
How long does the chocolate bark keep?
The bark will keep in an air tight container for a few days (if it lasts that long). You can also package it up in a gift bag to give to friends and family.
I wouldn’t recommend keeping the chocolate in a fridge or freezing it.
What chocolate should I use?
The chocolate is the centrepiece of this recipes, so use the best milk chocolate you can afford.
If you like you can also make this with dark or white chocolate or use a mixture of both.

How to make Christmas chocolate bark
Line a baking tray with baking or parchment paper.
Melt the chocolate
Get your kids to weigh the chocolate (no need to be too accurate) and break it into small pieces. Pop it in a heatproof bowl.
Set the bowl on top a pan of simmering water (a double boiler), and melt it gently. If your kids are old enough to be around a hot cooker they can help to stir the chocolate with a spatula or wooden spoon until it is smooth and fully melted.
Make the chocolate bark
Once the chocolate has melted get your kids to help pour it out on to the prepared baking sheet and spread it out with a spatula. Don’t spread it too thinly or it will break too easily – do it until it is about 5mm thick.
Decorate the Christmas bark
Get your kids to help add the Christmas sprinkles. If you want to add reindeer, simply add two pretzels for ears, two icing eyes and a red Smartie nose. Pop a few of them around the chocolate so there are lots later when you break the bark into pieces.
Leave the chocolate bark to set for a few hours or overnight.
Break the bark into pieces
Once the chocolate bark has set, remove it from the baking tray and pop it on a cutting board. Using a sharp knife break the bark into shards.
Serve and enjoy.
